Otis Redding III Dies From Cancer, Music Legend Otis Redding’s Son
Otis Redding III, the son of the legendary 1960s soul singer Otis Redding, has passed away at the age of 59 after a long battle with cancer.
The family confirmed the news on Wednesday, expressing their sorrow and heavy hearts in a statement released through the Otis Redding Foundation’s Facebook page.
Redding’s father tragically died in a plane crash along with several band members when the younger Redding was just 3 years old. He and his brother, Dexter, later formed the funk band The Reddings, which recorded six albums in the 1980s. While the band achieved some success with singles like “Remote Control” and “Call The Law,” they never quite reached the level of fame and recognition that their father had.
Despite the challenges and pressure of living up to his father’s legacy, Redding III continued to play and perform, even after The Reddings recorded their final album in 1988. He was hired as the guitarist for soul singer Eddie Floyd on a European tour, where he became comfortable performing his father’s famous songs like “(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay” under Floyd’s guidance.
In addition to performing and making music, Redding III worked with his family’s foundation to organize summer camps that teach children to play music. He also served as the board president for the local chapter of Meals on Wheels, demonstrating his commitment to giving back to his community.
Despite his own musical aspirations, Redding III was content to continue performing his father’s songs live and was grateful for the enduring legacy his father had left behind. In a 2018 interview with WCSH-TV in Portland, Maine, he spoke about the pressure he felt to live up to his father’s name but also expressed his willingness to embrace his father’s music and his own place in that legacy.
Otis Redding III’s passing marks the end of an era in soul music, but his contributions to his family’s charitable foundation and his own musical legacy will continue to be felt for years to come. He may have never achieved the same level of fame and recognition as his father, but he leaves behind a rich musical legacy that will be remembered and celebrated by fans of soul music and the Redding family for generations to come.
As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his life and his enduring impact on the world of music. Rest in peace, Otis Redding III.
