GMA calls for the abolition of certificate and diploma programs in nursing

GMA calls for a halt to certificate and diploma nursing courses

To improve nursing education and training in the nation, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has demanded that certificate and diploma nursing programs be discontinued.

To guarantee a highly qualified and professional nursing workforce, the GMA is suggesting that all certificate and diploma programs be replaced with degree programs.

Professor Ernest Yorke, vice president of the GMA, stated that the current system is strange and falls short of addressing the problems facing the nation’s healthcare industry. Prof. Yorke said in an interview with JoyNews on Wednesday that it was confusing to have three distinct entrance requirements for the nursing and midwifery fields.

According to him, the situation has resulted in an excessive number of auxiliary nurses in the health sector—roughly 60% of the workforce. He thinks the ratio needs to be changed such that the majority of nurses are degree-prepared.

“We have to cancel certificate programs, we have to cancel diploma programs, and train nurses and midwives at the degree level,” he said.

According to Prof. Yorke, Ghana must increase the bar for professional qualifications because it has the educational institutions and means to do so.

Although auxiliary nurses are in fact professionals, he noted that in order to increase the caliber of their care, their credentials need to be strengthened.

He thinks that baccalaureate-level nursing education will greatly improve maternal health and other health-related indicators for all nurses.

As for the diploma and certificate programs, he added that if they are discontinued, registered nurses with those credentials can continue their education by enrolling in degree programs that are already offered.
